What is an Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC)?

 People with speech or language problems rely on AAC to supplement spoken language or completely replace speech. Special aug-mentative aids, such as picture communica-tion boards and apps on mobile devices, are available to help people express them-selves. This can help increase social inter-action, school performance, and feelings of self-worth.

 Things to consider when selecting an AA C app:

 –  Does the app use words, pictures, or both?
 –  Does the app have a text-to-speech function (“voice”)?
 –  Can I upload and store my own pictures and text?
 –  Is the app compatible with social media sites?
